University of Queensland soccer teams made history on August 22nd, claiming the club’s first trophy since 1989.

UQ’s Metro 1 team claimed the 2009 Football Brisbane Metro Cup with a hard-fought 3 - 2 win over another University of Queensland team, Metro 4.

Andre Lieu scored two goals in the first half hour of the final at Perry Park, as the Metro 1 team threatened to run away with the contest.

Man of the Match Paul Pearce brought the contest back to life just before half-time, rushing clear of the defence to finish inside the far post.

The Metro 4 team put up a good fight throughout the competition, defeating teams from higher divisions in all five qualifying rounds.

"With the Metro 4 team beating the odds to reach the final, the lead-up had a touch of the romance we often see in the great cup competitions like England’s FA Cup," Metro 4’s David Kerruish said.

"At that point we started to realise we had a real opportunity to go all the way in the competition."

Despite falling short of an against-all-odds win in the final, the Metro 4 team was proud of their performance.

"The way we played throughout this competition has been outstanding and everyone involved with the team is incredibly satisfied with our achievements," Mr Kerruish said.

The University of Queensland is the only club to supply both finalists in the cup’s history.
