Sustainability encompasses much more than the environment, as UQ staff, students and community members will discover at a special seminar in October.
The upcoming event, “Ignorance 2 Impact: Creating Sustainable Futures”, held by the student-run organisation AIESEC, will provide a forum for concerned members of the UQ community to discuss pressing environmental and social issues.
“Sustainability is a minimum condition for a flourishing planet in the long term, ensuring that the social, environmental and economic systems that make up our community are providing a healthy and meaningful life for residents and visitors alike,” organising committee president Ted Liu said.
AIESEC provides a platform to raise awareness and gain further understanding about the issues that the world is currently facing, such as environmental and social sustainability. The organisation aims to empower young people to make a positive impact by providing them with internship and leadership opportunities around the globe.
“AIESEC UQ has in the past run events focusing on nationwide issues – most recently we hosted a forum on the water crisis and how individuals can become part of the solution,” Mr Liu said.
The upcoming seminar will be followed by a networking event involving industries which promote the creation of sustainable futures. One such company, Carpets for Communities, is a not-for-profit organisation which has recently partnered with AIESEC.
Carpets for Communities seeks to reduce poverty in Cambodia by empowering women with long-term income which can be used to support their families.
Ignorance 2 Impact will be held at room 1 of the Abel Smith Building, St Lucia on October 28 from 5.30pm to 8:30pm, followed by the networking event. Entry is free, however donations will be accepted throughout the night with all proceeds donated to Carpets for Communities.
