The University of Queensland has again been ranked as one of the world's top 50 universities for the eighth year in a row in the QS World University Rankings released today.

With a world ranking of 48, UQ has been ranked as the top University in Queensland and one of the top nationally in the QS rankings at www.topuniversities.com.

“The global competition in higher education is getting even tougher, so UQ’s consistently strong performance in all the major rankings is very pleasing,” Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Max Lu said.

UQ’s score in the QS rankings was driven by academic reputation (40 percent weighting); employer reputation (10 per cent), citations per faculty (20 percent), faculty student ratio (20 per cent), number of international students (5 per cent) and international faculty (5 per cent).

Professor Lu said UQ had achieved a score of 94.4 for its academic reputation, giving it a world rank of 45, a further improvement from its 54th ranking last year.

The QS academic survey was based on survey responses of almost 34,000 academics in 2011.

UQ’s employer reputation was steady at a world rank of 51 for employer reputation, based on 16,785 employer responses.

Professor Lu said the ranking recognised the University's strong investment in research infrastructure and high quality researchers and endorsed strong government and philanthropic investment.

In the QS subject area rankings, which do not factor into the overall score, UQ improved in every discipline area:

• Arts & Humanities: improved in rank from 97th in the world to 62nd
• Engineering & Technology: from rank 62 to 60
• Life Sciences & Medicine: from rank 40 to 37
• Natural Sciences: from rank 71 to 58
• Social Sciences & Management: improved from rank 61 to 47.

The latest rankings come on the heels of the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released last month at http://www.shanghairanking.com/index.html in which UQ was listed as one of the world’s top 100 universities, with a world ranking of 86.

UNESCO recognises 9760 universities in the world, and the current (21st) edition of the International Handbook of Universities lists 14,000 higher education institutions in 183 countries, so UQ is well and truly placed among the top one percent of international universities in all these rankings.

The Times Higher Education world university rankings will be released on October 6 at http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/
