The University of Queensland is preparing for 2012 Research Week, with a range of events and activities kicking off on Monday, September 17.
The week aims to raise awareness of UQ research and is one of the key annual events on the University’s calendar, along with Diversity Week, and Teaching and Learning Week.
Staff, students and the public are invited to take part in a handful of events, from conferences and debates to research open days.
The series of activities taking place during Research Week are as follows:
Monday, September 17
• BrisScience – UQ Research Week Public Lecture
This lecture will look at two thought-provoking research topics:
• Towards High Efficiency Microalgal Biofuel Systems, presented by Associate Professor Ben Hankamer, UQ Institute for Molecular Bioscience
• Has Science made religion obsolete? Presented by Professor Peter Harrison, UQ Centre for the History of European Discourses

• UQ Undergraduate Research Conference
The Office of Undergraduate Education is proud to host the 2012 Undergraduate Research Conference. The two-day multidisciplinary conference will showcase some of UQ’s finest undergraduate research projects through oral and poster presentations.
This year, two new exciting elements have been introduced – a Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) competition for undergraduate researchers and The Great Debate.

• Three Minute Thesis Final
3MT is an annual skills development activity that challenges research higher degree students to communicate the significance of their projects to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. First developed by UQ in 2008, it is now held in many countries across the world including Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
The winner of the 2012 3MT UQ Final, held at the St Lucia campus, will compete in the prestigious 3MT Trans-Tasman Final on Thursday, 11 October 2012. Click here for further information.
• Presentation of UQ Foundation Research Excellence Awards
A group of UQ’s best and brightest researchers will be honoured at these 14th annual UQ Foundation Research Excellence Awards. The UQ Graduate School also will recognise exceptional research advisors through the Excellence in Research Higher Degree Supervision Awards that reward advisors who have made a significant contribution to research training at UQ. Vice-Chancellor Professor Debbie Terry will present the awards.

Undergraduate Research Conference activities continue:
• The Great Debate: News, News everywhere: The 24 hour news cycle and 'Citizen Journalists'. Does it make us more informed or confused?
Hosted by Steve Cannane, widely known for being a reporter, producer and presenter for Triple J's current affairs program Hack.
The Great Debate will take opposing sides and discuss the proliferation of social media and its impact on how we find, consume and interact with the news.
The event is co-hosted by The Office of Undergraduate Education and the UQ Graduate School.

• Public lecture: Reducing the level of homelessness in Australia: examples from ISSR research
This research week seminar is hosted by Professor Andrew Jones, Director of the Social Wellbeing, Health and Housing research program at the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR).
“During the past three years ISSR has developed a research program that aims to build evidence to underpin policies and programs to reduce the incidence of homelessness in Australia. This seminar will provide an overview of this research and introduce three specific projects.” (Professor Jones)

• Law Research: Contents & Connections
The TC Beirne School of Law is holding an informal event designed to raise awareness of our legal research and its impact on society, government policy and reform, and to stimulate interest in research collaborations with other disciplines.
