About 15 regional coordinators from Vietnamese Department of Education and Training (DOET) have been awarded Australia Awards Fellowships to undertake intensive leadership training at The University of Queensland.
The Fellows, who are based in provinces throughout Vietnam, are responsible for implementing a large-scale, nation-wide program to rapidly improve the quality of English language teaching and learning in Vietnam.
They will participate in a four-week training program, which will be delivered by UQ’s Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ) from October-November 2013.
The Fellowship will equip the participants with essential language teaching leadership, strategic and project management skills.
The Institute’s Director Ms Christine Bundesen said that English language proficiency is an essential building block for a number of Vietnam’s development goals.
“The Vietnamese government’s National Foreign Languages 2020 Project (NFL2020) is an ambitious program,” Ms Bundesen said.
“It aims to ensure that young people are able to communicate, study, and work in English by the end of this decade.”
This Australia Award Fellowship will address a critical need to build human resources capacity at a regional level and is a key step in ensuring the success of the NFL2020.
“In addition to improving Vietnam’s education and global engagement outcomes, a successful NFL2020 will enable Vietnam to achieve its other development goals more readily,” Ms Bundesen said.
“These include poverty reduction, gender equality, and environmental sustainability through increased access to information and international collaboration through English.”
ICTE-UQ has previously delivered a number of programs to support the NFL2020 including intensive professional development training for university lecturers.
This is the first time the Institute has received Australian Government funding through the Australia Awards Fellowships for a National Foreign Languages 2020 program.
NFL2020 is an initiative of the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) administered by the Ministry’s Vietnam International Education Development (VIED).
The Australia Awards Fellowships are an initiative of the Australia Government which aim to develop leadership, address priority regional development issues, and build partnerships and links between Australia and our region.
