The University of Queensland 2018 Awards for Excellence have recognised a diverse range of staff for their outstanding contribution to students, staff and the wider community.

UQ Chief Human Resources Officer Dr Al Jury said the awards had attracted many high-calibre nominations.

“These awards play a huge part in the UQ reward and recognition program by recognising the outstanding work and contribution of our staff,” he said.

“They are deliberately designed to highlight those amongst us who best exemplify the UQ values of the pursuit of excellence; creativity and independent thinking; honesty and accountability; mutual respect and diversity; and supporting our people.”

Excellence in Innovation award winners:

  • Jake Carroll, Senior IT Manager, Queensland Brain Institute. Jake has designed and implemented a suite of high performance computing technologies, putting UQ at the forefront of research computing infrastructure.
  • The UQx Team. The team has collaborated to provide online education to more than two million learners via a catalogue of 54 Massive Open Online Courses and 20 Small Private Online Courses, making UQ a global leader in online education

Excellence in Service award winners:

  • Dr Amanda Carozzi, Postgraduate Research Administrator at the Institute for Molecular Science. Amanda has facilitated the graduation of nearly 250 IMB research students, helping to ensure the institute has one of the highest retention rates and fastest completion rates at UQ.
  • Debra McKenzie, Senior Academic Administrative Officer, School of Political Science and International Studies. Debra has steered the school through a range of challenges, provided excellent advice on teaching and learning and has an extraordinary knowledge of the institution and its structures and processes.
  • Dermatology Research Admin Team. Team members played a key role in establishing the Australian Skin and Skin Cancer Research Centre, combining more than 40 research teams. They’ve coordinated events, held forums and provided feedback to expedite research, and driven a social media campaign to extend their audience.
  • UQ-GEMSAS Project Team. The team implemented a new service provider for Graduate Entry Medical Admissions this year, training the provider, ensuring data sets were tested and the correct offers of study were released to applicants.

Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion award winners:

  • Pam Schindler, Librarian, Learning and Research Services. Pam has championed disability inclusion, ensuring learning resources are accessible for all staff and students, transforming the learning experience of many students.
  • UQ Ally Action Committee Team. The team’s efforts to support the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Plus community was critically important during the vote for marriage equality. Their work ensures UQ is a supportive employer.

Excellence in Wellness and Safety award winner:

  • Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences Safety and Wellness team. The team is pivotal to enabling the Faculty’s core teaching, research and engagement programs. Team members share knowledge and resources and exemplify best practice.

Excellence in Leadership award winners:

  • Professor Mary Garson, School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences. Mary has shown outstanding leadership in the education of thousands of chemistry students, engaged hundreds of community members through outreach program and has led improvements in the student experience.
  • Nicole Makoviney, Director of the Office of Research Ethics. Nicole has taken a major role in the two-year transformation of research ethics at UQ, re-envisaging and rebuilding UQ’s systems and supporting structures at a foundational level.
  • Research Outputs and Impacts team. The team within the UQ Library provides unique services to the UQ community, spanning publication analysis, bibliometrics and research data management.
