Traffic lights installed on The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus early last year are improving safety for people travelling to the University by foot, bike or bus.

The traffic lights are located in Chancellors Place, the centremost entrance to the University and one of two major public transit hubs on the St Lucia campus.

The lights were installed to replace a zebra crossing after safety concerns were raised due to heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Property and Facilities Division Transport Systems Manager Mark Kranz said the incidence of speeding on Slip Road had markedly decreased since the installation of the traffic lights.

“The new traffic lights have resulted in a decrease of about 30 percent of vehicles that are exceeding the 30km per hour speed limit,” Mr Kranz said.

“This improves safety for pedestrians, cyclists and buses,” he said.

“There is a direct correlation between improving safety and an increased uptake of more active, sustainable transport.”

Mr Kranz said commuters were encouraged to take up alternative modes of transport instead of driving to campus, in line with the University’s sustainability objectives.

“The University is prioritising pedestrians and cyclists with funding directed to improving the safety of walkways and bike paths on campus, and increasing the number of end-of-trip facilities for safe storage of bicycles.”
