Cairns high schools will welcome representatives from The University of Queensland next week during their annual visit to the region.

UQ Student Recruitment Manager Jessica Gallagher said the trip was designed to keep local students informed about the programs, scholarships and residential options available at the University – the state’s oldest.

“We received such a warm welcome from students, teachers and parents in 2007 and look forward to passing on information about the opportunities available,” Ms Gallagher said.

“UQ offers the second largest number of Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships in the country, which are open to all students from regional areas who may be experiencing financial hardship and are worth over $4000 each year.”

Deputy Principal of Trinity Anglican School Mrs Margaret Kennedy said last year’s visit had proved extremely useful.

“Being able to speak face-to-face with University staff allowed our students to have many of their questions answered,” she said.

“These visits are invaluable, providing a link between secondary and tertiary education.”

Former St Mary’s Catholic College student, Jason Tin, now a second-year UQ Journalism student and resident of St Leo’s College, said it was important to explore a variety of University options before making a decision.

“Attending the Cairns Careers Market gave me an opportunity to talk to real people about my options and gave me a glimpse into university life. I really enjoy living on campus and have met a lot of great people from all over Australia and overseas.”

The UQ Student Recruitment team will visit schools in Cairns on the 28th and 29th of May before being joined by representatives from the University’s Faculties, Residential Colleges and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the Careers Market on Friday, May 30.
