Springer Science+Business Media (Springer) has made a donation of journals and books to UQ's Heron Island Research Station (HIRS).
This follows a massive fire in March 2007 which destroyed 11 buildings, including the newly-built research complex, teaching facilities, several laboratories and the library, and caused many millions of dollars in damage.
Springer has supported the re-establishment of the library facilities by donating 26 volumes of the journal Coral Reefs as well as a selection of Springer books.
"When the editors of Coral Reefs contacted our publishing editors with the news, we quickly decided to help, collecting together the journals we had in stock and reprinting the ones that were no longer in print," Peter Hendriks, Springer’s President of Publishing & Marketing said.
"Centre for Marine Studies (CMS) staff then selected the Springer books they thought would be most useful, and our people in publishing, logistics and communications pulled together to get the shipment to Heron Island.
"We are pleased that the materials have now arrived and hope that they will help contribute to the success of the Heron Island Research Station’s important work."
Centre and Station staff are delighted with the delivery of books and journals.
"This generous donation will certainly go a long way in the restocking of the HIRS library,” the CMS Director, Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg said.
"All of the equipment was replaced last year and the buildings and infrastructure, including a new library, are due for completion in November this year."
Professor Hoegh-Guldberg said Heron Island Research Station would be grateful for any further donations of scientific journals and equipment.
Heron Island Research Station is one of the foremost coral reef field research stations in the world and an important research and teaching outpost of the CMS at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
The station is located on an eight-hectare island, 80 kilometres off Australia’s north-eastern coast and hosts more than 15,000 scientists, teachers and students annually, who conduct research in the field of reef ecology and climate change.
