High school students from Cairns can have all their university questions answered during a series of UQ visits next week.

The visits are part of a regional tour to help students keep up to date with the programs, scholarships and residential options available at UQ, the largest university in the state.

UQ student recruitment coordinator Jessica Gallagher said the visits would help students from grades 10,11 and 12 decide which study paths best suited them.

“It is not always easy for those in regional areas to attend university Open Days and other information sessions, so we want to take the information to them, so that they are able to gain a more complete picture of their options after high school,” Ms Gallagher said.

Former Smithfield State High student Joe Monteith said attending last year’s sessions made the difficult choice of what and where to study easier.

“No one from other universities actually came to speak to us, whereas with UQ someone personally came and told us what life was like going to be like at the University,” Mr Monteith said.

“It’s good to know you’re not just another number.”

A Smithfield school and sports captain in 2006, Mr Monteith is now studying a Bachelor of Science degree on his way to becoming a doctor.

With his first semester of classes almost completed, Mr Monteith said he was enjoying his studies thus far, which have included talks from leading scientists and a field trip to the Moreton Bay Research Centre.

“UQ has welcomed me with open arms and has given me every possible opportunity to succeed,” he said.

University staff will visit schools in Cairns and surrounding areas from the 22nd to the 24th of May before taking part in this year’s Cairns Career Market.
