Personal injury law will come under the spotlight during the 2007 McPherson law lecture series next month, organized by The University of Queensland`s TC Beirne School of Law.
Professor Peter Cane of the Australian National University will present three seminars in the series on the topic: “The Political Economy of Personal Injury Law” on March 19, 20 and 22.
“The tidal wave of legislation following the insurance crisis and the Ipp Review in 2002 seems to have subsided, momentarily at least,” Professor Cane said.
(Justice David Ipp headed a Federal Government panel to review the law of negligence, tabling a 254-page report with 34 recommendations in October 2002.)
Professor Cane said it was an appropriate time to take stock and to rethink some of the large underlying questions about personal injury law that had not received as much attention as they deserved in the politically charged debates of recent years.
“As a result of events in 2002, personal injury law is being monitored more closely than it was before the crisis,” he said.
“As the impact of the post-Ipp legislation becomes clearer, attention will inevitably turn to the fundamental issues and questions discussed in these lectures.”
The lectures in the Brisbane city are:
• Politics – Monday, March 19;
• Economics – Tuesday, March 20; and
• The Political Economy of a Mixed System – Thursday, March 22.
Peter Cane has been Professor of Law in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University since 1997. For 20 years prior to this he taught at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, successively as a lecturer, reader and professor.
His main research interests lie in the law of obligations, focusing on tort law and in public law, with a focus on administrative law.
Besides the legal profession, Professor Cane believes his seminars will be of benefit to the insurance industry, medical profession, local government authorities, the non-profit welfare sector, providers of sporting and recreational services and policy-makers.
The seminars will be held from 5.30pm – 7.30pm at the Banco Court, Supreme Court Building, Brisbane. Attendance is free, however, registration is essential. Registrations close on March 15.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points are available.
