19 May 2006

University staff, students and visitors are advised of traffic changes associated with the Dutton Park-St Lucia bridge on the St Lucia side of the river from Tuesday, May 23, to September, 2006.

A short section of Sir William MacGregor Drive, St Lucia campus will be closed near the Dutton Park-St Lucia Bridge construction area during that time.

Brisbane City Council advises that the closure is necessary to enable works associated with the bridge`s construction.

To offset the change, a closed section of College Road near the Alumni Gardens has reopened today, May 19 and will be open until September.

The temporary changes will affect the following user groups:

• Joggers and pedestrians: The John Oxley Walking Track is being diverted at the Dutton-Park-St Lucia Bridge site. Joggers and pedestrians travelling south will cross over Sir William MacGregor Drive, on a portion closed to traffic, then follow the footpath on College Road and turn back to Sir William MacGregor drive along the new pedestrian path beside the bridge embankment and back across Sir William MacGregor Drive, on a portion closed to traffic, before rejoining the track.

• Motorists and cyclists: Drivers and cyclists travelling south along Sir William MacGregor Drive will be able to continue their journey along College Road and Thynne Road.

• Parking will still be available between Thynne Road and the closed section of Sir William MacGregor Drive surrounding fields number 2 and 3.

• Ferry users: Ferry passengers will cross Sir William MacGregor Drive, on a portion closed to traffic, then follow the footpath on College Road until the pedestrian crossing and then connect to existing paths into the eastern part of the campus.

A 280 tonne crane will be delivered on site to Sir William MacGregor Drive in the early hours of Friday, May 26. Traffic control personnel will be placed at the following intersections during the crane’s arrival:

• Sir Fred Schonell Drive and Sir William MacGregor Drive;
• Blair Drive and Sir William MacGregor Drive; and
• College Road and Sir William MacGregor Drive.

Traffic will not be permitted to enter Sir William MacGregor Drive during the delivery of the crane (for approximately 20 minutes).

The University’s Property and Facilities’ Security section will clear an 80m section of parking on the northern side of Sir William MacGregor Drive beside the Eric Freeman Boatshed to allow for the swing of the vehicle.

This will be done on the evening of Thursday, May 25. The area will be released for parking after the crane is in place from about 3:30am on Friday, May 26.
