The University of Queensland Schonell Cinema will be holding a special screening of the film In Search of Mozart to support a new professorship in Shakespeare studies.

The screening (part of an exclusive season at the Schonell) will be held on Thursday March 23 at 7.30pm and will help raise funds for the Lloyd Davis Memorial Visiting Professorship in Shakespeare Studies.

The professorship is a new position, created for leading Shakespeare academics, raising the international standard of Shakespeare studies at UQ.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor John Hay, AC, said the new position would draw a major world scholar to UQ each year.

“UQ is committed to long-term expansion of Shakespeare studies, to build on our international reputation for excellence,” Professor Hay said.

The Lloyd Davis Memorial Visiting Professorship in Shakespeare Studies was established in memory of Associate Professor Lloyd Davis.

Dr Davis was a scholar of the literary Renaissance in the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at UQ. He passed away, aged 46, in August last year.

Dr Davis was much respected by staff and students. He won the national Australian Universities’ Humanities Teacher of the Year Award for 1999, and served as Arts Faculty Director of Studies.

The film is the first ever major feature-length documentary of Mozart’s life and marks the 250th anniversary of his birth.

It is produced in association with the world’s leading orchestras, opera houses and musicians.

The cost of the film is $7, and the School of English, Media Studies and Art History welcomes donations for the professorship.
