CITATION
Award of Doctor of Engineering honoris causa
Professor Gregory McRae

Chancellor,

Professor Gregory McRae is the Hoyt C. Hottel Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an Executive Director of Morgan Stanley in New York. He joined MIT from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Professor McRae’s teaching and research is related to new energy technologies, process systems engineering, finance/project risk management and policies related to climate change.

He has received many awards for his work in computational science, policy analysis and process engineering including the prestigious Presidential Young Investigator Award; has authored numerous articles on air quality issues, chemical kinetics and process engineering; and has been on the editorial board of five technical journals.

He has been a member of many government, industry and academic advisory boards including National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council panels and the US Department of Energy Science Advisory Board.

As an eminent expatriate Australian, Professor McRae has maintained his commitment to his home country over the past two decades through the university, government and innovation sectors.

For example, in the three years 2007–2009, he was a member of the US delegation to the Australian–American Leadership Dialogue meetings in Australia, aimed at building working relations at senior levels between the two countries.

Additionally, across the years, he has organised and often hosted many senior delegations of UQ executive members.

For the past eight years, Professor McRae has been a source of strategic support to UQ senior executive and research staff in planning and developing funding proposals and outreach programs related to high-performance computing and modelling. He is a strong supporter of UQ’s efforts to engage with US-based alumni.

Chancellor, in recognition of his distinguished career and academic distinction in the energy field, his service to Queensland and to Australia and his major contribution to The University of Queensland, I present to you Professor Gregory McRae (Bachelor of Engineering from Monash University and PhD in Engineering from Caltech) for the award of Doctor of Engineering honoris causa bestowed by the Senate of The University of Queensland.
