UQ staff and student members of the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra have shown plenty of community spirit by holding a classical music benefit recently to help victims of the Victorian fires and Queensland floods.

Music director and UQ PhD student Carolina Casaril said the benefit concert attracted lots of people and that over 140 tickets were sold, raising $2000 for those affected by the disasters.

"Our contribution is especially important for those affected by the floods," she said.

Held at St John's Cathedral in the Brisbane CBD, the concert consisted of five classical music pieces, with the Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra swelling to 50 members just for the event.

"It was really nice for an orchestra to have so many people get play together just for that one occasion. They meet new people, and it’s a real opportunity. Hopefully it will happen again," Ms Casaril said.

Ms Casaril also noted the standout performances of organist Robert Boughen and violin soloist Atilla Sautov.

The Indooroopilly Chamber Orchestra, located on Swann Road St Lucia, is also on the lookout for new members from the UQ community. If you can play an instrument and are interested in joining, contact Sam on 3378 7056.
