This article has been updated following Shanghai Ranking’s amendment of Academic Ranking for World Universities results after original publication.

The University of Queensland has ranked 51 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2023, maintaining second position in Australia.

The latest result follows UQ’s strong performance in this year’s QS World University Rankings, jumping seven places to be ranked 43 in the world.

The ARWU result reinforces the University’s reputation for world-leading research, with the number of papers published in Nature and Science journals among the indicators used.

The University also rated strongly for Highly Cited Researchers, reflecting the global influence of research being conducted across a range of fields.

The ARWU considers more than 2,500 universities and publishes the top 1,000 in the world each year.

Universities are also ranked by other performance indicators including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals and the per capita academic performance of an institution.
