Four University of Queensland researchers have been awarded more than $12.8 million through the Australian Research Council (ARC) prestigious Australian Laureate Fellowships.
The ARC awarded a total $53.9 million to 17 researchers across Australia who will play a significant and sustained leadership role in strengthening the nation’s research and innovation capability.
UQ was awarded the highest number of fellowships in the nation for the 2023 round with four awards.
The scheme is part of the ARC Discovery Program building Australia’s research capacity by strengthening links among the international research community and industry, and providing exceptional research training environments and mentorship.
Australian Laureate Fellowships were awarded to:
- Professor Janeen Baxter - to provide new insights into gender inequality, strengthening Australia’s social cohesion and economic progress by providing research, policy initiatives and capacity.
- Professor Matthew Hornsey – to identify the psychological factors underpinning climate inaction, test strategies capable of catalysing action, and deliver a suite of impact tools for government, industry and innovators.
- Professor Alpha Yap – to improve understanding of how tissues and bodies are formed and function by identifying the information pathways that cells use to communicate.
- Professor Yusuke Yamauchi – to generate highly efficient electrocatalysts and energy conversion devices by developing the next generation of conductive porous materials.
Professor Baxter was also awarded the Kathleen Fitzpatrick award, recognising exceptional female researchers who will undertake an ambassadorial role to promote women in research and mentor early-career researchers.
