The University of Queensland has recognised a leading Aboriginal philosopher and a visionary entrepreneur with Honorary Doctorates.

Adjunct Associate Professor Mary Graham and Mr Maha Sinnathamby AM received their awards as part of UQ’s 2023 mid-year graduations.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the pair were worthy recipients of the university’s highest honour.

“Honorary Doctorates acknowledge those whose exceptional achievements have made a unique and lasting contribution to the community,” Professor Terry said.

“Both Adjunct Associate Professor Graham and Mr Sinnathamby embody UQ’s mission, values and aspirations in their respective fields.

“It gives me great pleasure to celebrate and acknowledge their outstanding service.”

Adjunct Associate Professor Graham is a Kombumerri and Wakka Wakka Elder, community development leader, philosopher and educator.

In her work at UQ she shares her knowledge with students in the fields of Aboriginal history, politics, and comparative philosophy.

Adjunct Associate Professor Graham has played a part in the establishment of many key Indigenous organisations across Australia and is globally recognised for her longstanding advocacy for, and commitment to, Australia’s Indigenous peoples.

Mr Sinnathamby is a community leader and entrepreneur, who has made an indelible impact in the field of urban development.

The Malaysian-born civil and design engineer established Springfield city, Australia’s largest master-planned city, and the only Australian master-planned city since Canberra.

The thriving community of more than 50,000 residents celebrated its 30th year in 2022.

Mr Sinnathamby’s strong belief in the importance of education is reflected in the development’s 22 early learning centres, 12 schools and a university campus.

Mr Sinnathamby has a demonstrated commitment to philanthropy, community welfare and initiatives that uplift and empower communities.

He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019.

The UQ awards were conferred during graduation ceremonies at the St Lucia campus in July.
