Learn how insects are used to solve crime, walk through a replica Stonehenge and see wearable technology as fashion at this year’s University of Queensland Open Day.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the University was set to welcome prospective students to the St Lucia campus on Sunday 7 August, showcasing all that UQ has to offer.

“UQ Open Day is an opportunity for prospective students to take part in innovative activities, meet lecturers who are experts in their field and visit UQ’s world-class learning and research facilities,” Professor Terry said.

“We look forward to welcoming students from across the state, both onsite and online, and to demonstrate the many pathways available to study at UQ, regardless of geographical location or financial circumstances.”

This year, visitors can tour the 114-hectare St Lucia site, taking in the stunning sandstone Great Court as well as museums, libraries, laboratories, lecture halls and sporting facilities.

Prospective students will gain a valuable insight into life at a global top 50 university, with each faculty offering information sessions, lectures or hands-on activities.

For those unable to attend, lectures and a virtual campus will be available online so teenagers and their parents can participate from anywhere in the state.

Dr Gurion Ang from UQ’s School of Biological Sciences said they would offer a range of mini-classes to give visitors a taste of learning.

“You can see how insect larvae helps in post-mortems after a homicide with forensic entomology,” Dr Ang said.

“Our zoologists will help to find nocturnal animals in a ‘night at the museum’ and explore creatures collected from the deep sea with our marine biologists.”

He said UQ Open Day was an unmissable opportunity for students in Years 10 to 12.

“Meeting lecturers and current UQ students can help you to make an informed decision about your future study,” he said.

Open Day also provides prospective students the chance to hear from industry experts about the skills needed to enter the workforce, with UQ graduates the most employable in Queensland.

The UQ Admissions team will be on hand to answer questions and help prospective students explore their options.

The first on-campus UQ Open Day since 2019 will include COVID-safe measures, with mask wearing encouraged indoors and outside when physical distancing is not possible.

The UQ Gatton Open Day will be held on Sunday 21 August.
