Four University of Queensland researchers have been admitted to The Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) in recognition of their outstanding research contributions to their areas of disciplines.
Professor Charmine Härtel, Professor Roland Bleiker, Professor Heather Douglas and Professor Katharine Gelber will be inducted into the Academy in October, alongside 42 other researchers.
ASSA President Professor Glenn Withers AO congratulated the 46 Fellows elected this year, half of whom are female.
“As women hold up half the sky, it is appropriate that these appointments affirm clearly that women and men are being recognised for their equal contribution to social science at the highest levels,” Professor Withers said.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Aidan Byrne said the fellowship offer was a testament to the strength of their research careers.
“This prestigious fellowship is a fitting acknowledgement of the differing contributions that Charmine, Roland, Heather and Katharine have made to the social sciences,” Professor Byrne said.
“Their work has significantly advanced research knowledge and developed new approaches to areas as diverse as international relations, political theory, criminal justice, domestic violence and human rights.
“This invitation from the Academy reinforces the fact that UQ researchers are creating change in the world by making exceptional contributions to society.”
The ASSA fellowships recognise Australia’s leading minds in the social sciences and their contributions to advancing research knowledge and diverse approaches to social impacts.
UQ’s latest ASSA fellows are:
Professor Härtel is the Chair of Human Resource Management and Organizational Development and Professor of Occupational Health and IO Psychology in the UQ Business School. She is also a Senior Research Fellow for the Australian Institute for Business and Economics (AIBE) and has published numerous books, government and industry reports, over 60 book chapters, and over 100 refereed journal articles. With over 30 years of experience and numerous achievements, her research interests include leadership and employment practices; work processes and conditions that enhance employee health, safety, wellbeing, social inclusion, and performance.
Professor Bleiker, from the UQ School of Political Science and International Studies, specialises across international relations, peace studies and political theory. He also coordinates the cross-disciplinary research program, Visual Politics, which builds on existing strengths and resources to forge new interdisciplinary and large-scale collaborations world-wide.
Professor Gelber is a former ARC Future Fellow (2012-2015) and Professor of Politics and Public Policy in UQ’s School of Political Science and International Studies. She has published more than 40 journal articles and released seven books. In November-December 2017 she will be a Visiting Scholar in the Global Freedom of Expression Project at Columbia University, New York and is currently Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the 2018 World Congress of the International Political Science Association, Brisbane.
Professor Douglas is an ARC Future Fellow in UQ’s TC Beirne School of Law. Her research delves into areas within criminal justice and domestic violence, and has published widely on criminal justice issues and legal responses to domestic violence and child protection. She was the lead researcher and project co-ordinator with the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration, and was the lead chief investigator (2012-2015) on the Australian Feminist Judgments Project, funded by the Australian Research Council.
