The University of Queensland’s excellence in life sciences has attracted a top-20 global placing in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Broad Subject Fields.

The news follows UQ’s leap from 77th to 55th up the ARWU general world rankings released last month.

UQ Acting Provost Professor Joanne Wright said the university’s performance in the international ARWU-FIELD rankings solidified its earlier leap in the general rankings table, further demonstrating the quality of UQ’s academic staff and students.

“UQ held steady or improved across all subject fields, placing in the top 20 globally for life sciences, in the top 75 for clinical medicine and pharmacy, and in the top 100 for both social sciences and for engineering/technology and computer sciences.

“Our international rise in life sciences has been particularly notable, as we have consistently climbed since 2008, reaching the top 40 in 2013, top 35 last year and then leaping 15 spots into the top 20 for 2016.

“With over 10,000 world universities in the world, such progress reflects UQ’s high standards and excellent facilities, and our commitment to always improving on the student experience.”

UQ is also the top-performing Australian university in the life sciences subject ranking.

The ARWU-FIELD subject rankings list the top 200 universities for each of five broad subject fields.

It is assessed on a number of factors including the number of alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly-cited researchers and the percentage of articles published in the top 20 per cent journals of each field.
