The University of Queensland has confirmed its status as one of the world’s top universities, placing 60th internationally and 3rd in Australia in a prestigious global ranking.

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-17 – which considers teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income – was released today (22 September).

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said UQ’s consistent high ranking reflected the hard work of the University’s researchers, professional staff, academics, students and industry partners.

“UQ continues to place well among the more than 10,000 universities worldwide, demonstrating our staff and student’s dedication to excellence,” he said.

“It’s especially gratifying to see UQ maintain its placing at 60th for the second year running, despite continued uncertainty in Australian higher education.

“Results such as this are a testament to the hard work of our academic and professional staff who strive to keep UQ’s place among the top global universities while facing increased competition from international institutions.

“Having a globally-respected university is important for Australia’s higher education exports – an $18 billion industry.”

The news comes on the back of UQ’s high placings in other global rankings. The University placed 55th globally and 2nd in Australia in the Academic Ranking of World Universities announced last month.

UQ also placed number one in Australia in the Nature Index Top Academic Institutions, and 51st globally in the QS World Rankings and 52nd in the US News Best Global University Rankings.

The THE rankings have been independently audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers, in respect of the methodological process, calculations and transparency.
