Sustainability seminars, share cars and a suitcase rummage—these are just a few of the 28 events happening during The University of Queensland’s Sustainability Week from 15 - 19 August.

UQ’s fourth annual celebration of all things sustainable features a packed line-up of talks, tours, tree-planting, film screenings, workshops and more.

The week promotes all aspects of sustainability, from transport and biodiversity to renewable energy and climate change solutions, and aims to encourage everyone to get involved in creating change for a sustainable future.

UQ Manager of Energy and Sustainability Andrew Wilson said many events, such as the rooftop solar tours and film screenings, were open to all.

GoGet car sharing is now at UQ“Sustainability Week is a great opportunity for UQ to showcase its commitment to sustainability, at the same time as engaging the campus community,” he said.

“Activities like planting trees or riding the PedalPower iPhone Charger bikes in the Global Change Institute are a fun way to get people thinking about solutions for sustainable living.”

This year’s program features a number of events designed to promote sustainable transport options.

On Monday 15 August, GoGet, Australia’s largest car-sharing service, will launch at UQ for staff, students and the local community to use.

On Friday 19 August, not-for-profit organisation Commuter Xpress will run an information session about their carpool-style bus service for commuters who live more than 40 kilometres from UQ.

Keen or aspiring cyclists can sign up for a beginner or intermediate workshop on ergonomics, physical conditioning and flexibility training on Monday 15 August, and put their newfound skills to the test by hopping on their bikes for Ride to Uni day on Thursday 18.

Other program highlights include tours of the Global Change Institute, St Lucia rooftop solar arrays and the Gatton Solar Research Facility, a suitcase rummage, a screening of hit documentary Cowspiracy, a debate about the merits of voluntary action and a seminar about the effects of palm oil on wildlife and biodiversity.

Sustainability Week runs from Monday 15 to Friday 19 August. Find the full program and register for events online: http://uq.edu.au/sustainability/UQSustainabilityWeek.
