The University of Queensland is working to make its pathways safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic officers will be stationed at various major pedestrian areas during weekdays to spread awareness about safe cycling practices at the St Lucia campus.
UQ Head of Security Mr Warren Collyer said the four-week initiative would promote safety on shared paths and ensure that cyclists and pedestrians were on the same page when it comes to travelling safely at UQ.
Officers will distribute safety brochures to cyclists and chat to them about being more aware of pedestrians on footpaths.
The brochures detail the positive aspects of cycling as a mode of transport and highlight the areas where cyclists share paths with pedestrians.
“the key to cycling safely is courtesy, consideration and consistency,” Mr Collyer said.
“Cyclists are permitted on footpaths unless restricted by a bicycle prohibition sign, provided they give way to pedestrians.”
Traffic officers will be in shared areas, including the Prentice Plaza, Campbell Place Mansfield Plaza and near the Hawken Engineering building.
“UQ encourages cycling as an alternative to driving and has bicycle storage rooms, parking stands and showering facilities across the campus,” Mr Collyer said.
