The University of Queensland Press’s latest offering is a gritty and gripping crime thriller by the winner of the 2013 Queensland Literary Awards Best Emerging Author category.
Rebecca Jessen’s first book, Gap – an honest and captivating portrayal of the aftermath of crime – leads readers on an unexpected journey.
Gap’s protagonist, Ana, becomes a suspect in a murder investigation.
The detective in charge of the case is no stranger to Ana, who is forced to face her past and the things she has left behind.
As the sole carer for her younger sister, Ana is desperately trying to stay ahead of the law.
Unsure of who she can trust and isolated by her crime, Ana is drawn into a passionate affair that breaks all the rules.
As she confronts her past, Ana finds herself caught between moral obligation and doing what she knows best – running.
Jessen says she has drawn inspiration for Gap from her own life and experiences.
“I was keen to explore family dysfunction and class, in particular, the way in which people are bound to each other, and the lengths we will go to escape the paths we have been set on in life,” she said.

About the author
Rebecca Jessen was born in Orange and grew up in Western Sydney. In 2011 she graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. In 2012 Rebecca won the State Library of Queensland Young Writers Award for her short story, Gap. In 2013 she won the Queensland Literary Award for Best Emerging Author for the novelisation of Gap.
