One of the Asia Pacific’s leading university-owned development groups has found a new home at The University of Queensland.

The UQ International Development unit, previously part of the university’s commercialisation company UniQuest, will now report to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Monique Skidmore.

The unit successfully managed more than 500 projects in Asia, the Pacific region and Africa during its 20 years with UniQuest.

Recent projects include a project funded by the Asian Development Bank working with the Philippines’ government Department of Tourism to improve the competitiveness of that country’s tourism industry and a suite of professional development courses for Indonesian government officials funded by the Australian Government.

Professor Skidmore said UQ International Development would continue to deliver quality development outcomes in closer alignment with UQ’s global engagement strategy.

“UQ’s vision is Knowledge Leadership for a Better World,” Professor Skidmore said.

“We are serious about harnessing our considerable expertise and networks to make a difference in all parts of the world.

“Through UQ International Development we will continue to work in a focussed way with neighbouring countries to build relationships and work as a partner in the generation and exchange of knowledge.”

Professor Skidmore said UQ International Development would continue to actively pursue commercial and non-commercial opportunities with funding agencies and through leading managing contractors.

In recent years, International Development has been successfully delivering courses under the Australia Awards funded by the Australian aid program. The Australia Awards are aimed at generating strong relationships between global leaders and Australia.

UQ International Development Director Joe McLean said delivery of the Australia Awards courses drew on expertise across several  faculties and institutes, ICTE-UQ and central units.

“The Australia Awards are very important but only one area of development activities,” Mr McLean said.

“Building on the Australia Awards experience and deeper involvement within UQ, we are looking forward to increased opportunities to help drive UQ’s global engagement strategy.”
