TEDxUQ 2014 – “Old Ideas, New World”.
28 March 2014

Ideas exchanged at this Saturday’s TEDxUQ event will be live streamed on line, meaning anyone who missed out on tickets can still be inspired from their own homes.

Some of Queensland’s finest minds will converge on The University of Queensland on Saturday, 29 March for TEDxUQ 2014 – to speak at the event themed “Old Ideas, New World”.

The event will be streamed live from 8.45am to 3pm, with the video feed available here video feed will be publicly available here: https://new.livestream.com/tedx/tedxuq/

Participants will explore how connecting with classic ideas can open a world of possibilities, even in an age of exponential change.

TEDxUQ’s speaker and outreach coordinator Hannah Thomas said the free event would see a bigger speaker roll than last year, and would explore how an understanding of the past could help make decisions for a better future.

"We have an expanded line-up of leaders and innovators who will be on stage to share their brilliant ideas on our theme,” she said.

Speakers include activist and educator Gemma Sisia and Professor Bill Von Hippel.

Mrs Sisia runs St Jude’s, a school that provides free education to 1800 poor children in the Arusha region of Tanzania.

Professor von Hippel, former Head of UQ’s School of Psychology, is a social psychologist who has lectured and written on topics such as the surprising truths about happiness and how stereotypes can affect performance.

Registration to attend in person opens on 13-17 March, and the event will be streamed live online.

TEDxUQ’s licensee and curator Lawrence Kurniawan Wong said there had been an overwhelming response last year and that live streaming would help reach those who cannot attend the event because of TED’s strict rules on audience size.

More news on TEDxUQ 2014’s live stream and post-event videos can be found here. Individual high-res videos of each talk will also be available at a later date.

The independently organised event, operated under a license from TED, is fully organised by UQ students and staff.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised (subject to certain rules and regulations).
