University of Queensland School of Economics graduate and Adjunct Associate Professor Mark Gray is the new Queensland Under Treasurer.

The economist took up the role as head of the State’s Treasury Department on 18 November.

UQ School of Economics Head Professor Flavio Menezes said Mr Gray had an ideal combination of skills necessary to lead the Treasury Department.

“Having held senior executive positions with the Macquarie Group, BDO and Queensland Treasury, Mark has a wealth of experience that will allow him to support the State Government in its plans to reform the business of government in Queensland,” Professor Menezes said.

“The appointment is a credit to Mark, and The UQ School of Economics is proud to have one of its own recognised in this manner.

“He has contributed to the School in a number of ways, including participating in a roundtable discussion of the Queensland Commission of Audit Final Report.”

Mr Gray has almost 40 years of experience in the private and public sectors.

Prior to taking up the Under Treasurer position, he was the Queensland Competition Authority CEO and before that the Queensland Government’s Independent Commission of Audit CEO.

Previously, Mr Gray held senior executive positions with BDO (Qld) and the Macquarie Group.

He also worked for Queensland Treasury for 17 years, including five years as the Deputy Under Treasurer and as a Director of the Capital Markets Board of the Queensland Treasury Corporation.

Earlier in his career Mr Gray held appointments with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, the Industries Assistance Commission and the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Mr Gray graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours) from UQ in 1973.

He has been associated with the school as an Adjunct Associate Professor since 1999.
