The University of Queensland’s contributions to the State’s export sector have secured UQ two awards and four finalist spots at the Premier’s 2013 Export Awards.

UQ won the award for Education and Training, recognising a longstanding engagement between the University and Indonesia, while JKTech, one of the University’s research commercialisation companies, won the award for Minerals and Energy.

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Dr Anna Ciccarelli said the awards, announced on October 24, 2013, recognised businesses and groups that were helping put Queensland on the map as a major global provider of education, services, and that UQ was proud to be among them.

“As Queensland’s largest university, we play a significant role in this sector, but also in the transfer of research outcomes to innovations, products and services that help boost the productivity and global competitiveness of the State’s economic pillars of resources, agriculture, construction and tourism,” she said.

“The University has a global network of more than 100 university, government and corporate partners in more than 25 countries, and this has helped drive our success at these awards,” Dr Ciccarelli said.

UQ won the following awards:

Education and Training Award: The University of Queensland
Minerals and Energy Award: JKTech, the technology transfer company for the UQ Sustainable Minerals Institute.

UQ was a finalist for the following awards:

Business Services: UQ Institute of Continuing and TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ).
Environmental Solutions: JKTech
Information and Communication Technology: JKTech
Infrastructure and Construction: JKTech

UQ Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the award recognised UQ’s longstanding engagement with Indonesia.

“UQ’s relationship with Indonesia was forged in the 1950s, when the University first began welcoming Indonesian students, predominantly sponsored by the Australian Government as part of the original Colombo Plan,” Professor Terry said.

UQ’s office in Jakarta, expected to open later this year, will build on this long history and will strengthen further the University’s research, education and engagement activities in Indonesia.

Professor Terry said the University’s efforts would also be strengthened by the Federal Government’s commitment to send more students to Asia to study through its new Colombo Plan.

“UQ welcomes this commitment, which will yield considerable benefits for both Queensland and Indonesia,” she said.

Dr Ciccarelli said UQ’s success at the awards was a “stellar outcome”, particularly following ICTE-UQ's Export Award successes last year.

In 2011 ICTE-UQ won both the Queensland State and the national Australian Export Award for Education and Training.
