High-achieving current and recent year 12 school-leavers are encouraged to apply for one of many Academic Scholarships being awarded by The University of Queensland in 2014.

Scholarships on offer include $6000 Merit Scholarships for the first year of study, UQ Excellence scholarships that provide $6000 a year for four years and the prestigious Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships valued at $12,000 a year for up to five years.

Applicants are required to demonstrate high academic achievement, outstanding leadership and/or community service achievements during their senior studies.

Kathy Lai, who was awarded a 2013 UQ Link Scholarship to study a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science at UQ, urged students to devote time and effort to preparing their applications.

“So far my scholarship has helped with reducing financial pressures of university life and allowed me to really focus on my studies,” she said.

“The best tip I can give to any student looking to apply for a scholarship is to be quick and organised. Read up on the scholarship information and know what you are eligible for.”

UQ 2013 Excellence scholarship recipient Jessica Kraak echoed Kathy’s advice.

“Students looking to apply for a UQ scholarship need to sell themselves,” she said.

“It may feel a little strange talking about yourself and your achievements when you're so used to being modest, but this is your chance to really show off.

“The University wants to hear all about your achievements. Tell them anything about yourself and your achievements that you think would interest them.”

Jessica said the scholarship allowed her to participate in every facet of university life.

“The best thing about uni life for me is two-fold – the freedom of independent study that allows me to pursue other hobbies, and the amazing people that I have met in the first year of my degree,” she said.

“My UQ degree will enable me to pursue my dream career of becoming a teacher and hopefully, at some stage, a Head of Department or even a Principal.”

Applications close 5pm Thursday 31 October 2013.
