Careers in the agriculture, animal, plant and veterinary science fields will be showcased at The University of Queensland Gatton Open Day on Sunday 18 August.

UQ Gatton Campus Director Janelle Zahmel said prospective students could plan future careers and also focus on the short-term, with the UQ Gatton Passport Challenge offering a chance to win a $500 Apple iTunes Voucher.

“By collecting a stamp from the different categories on the Passport you will find out all the information you need to study a program on campus as well as information on the services that are available to assist you when studying here,” Ms Zahmel said.

“There is a lot to see and do on the day, including farrier demonstrations, animal and plant nurseries, detector dogs, reptiles and agricultural equipment.”

“Tours of the residential halls, veterinary science facilities, dairy and the pool and gym will be running all day,” she said.

Visitors can learn about the new Bachelor of Science majors in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience and Soil and Plant Bioscience.

Dean of Agriculture Professor Neal Menzies said the majors would help meet the high demand for agriculture graduates.

“We need a highly skilled workforce for the agriculture and food industries of the future, and these programs will ensure we are providing the best academic environment for teaching the science that underpins sustainable agriculture,” Professor Menzies said.

The new majors offer a pathway for students interested in working in biosecurity, veterinary pharmaceuticals or even biomedical science and also for students aiming to improve their rank to gain access into the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.

It is available free from the App Store and Google Play.

The UQ Gatton Open Day will run from 9.30am-3pm, with free parking available on campus all day.
