Lord Mayor of Brisbane Graham Quirk will extend the hand of friendship to more than 1500 international students at The University of Queensland on Thursday, 23 May.

The University of Queensland will host the International Student Friendship Ceremony, where students will receive a ‘Certificate of Friendship’ and information about their adopted city.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Dr Anna Ciccarelli said an official ceremony welcoming and congratulating International students on their choice to study in Brisbane was a great initiative of the Lord Mayor.

“We are honoured that UQ will mark the first time a Friendship Ceremony has been delivered on campus at a major educational institution,” she said.

“This is a great opportunity to personally thank students for choosing the UQ and the city of Brisbane as their study destination.

“UQ will always encourage our students to remain friends of the University and city even after they’ve graduated,” she said.

The Lord Mayor will be attending the event that aims to thank and welcome international students to Brisbane.

“The International Student Friendship Ceremonies are one way we can thank the 75,000-plus international students currently studying in Brisbane,” Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said.

“Their contribution to Brisbane’s economic and social fabric cannot be understated.

“International students help build a cosmopolitan, vibrant city and strengthen Brisbane’s network with cities around the globe, creating lifelong connections.

“These students from around the globe further our growing reputation as Australia’s new world city,” he said.

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and International) Professor Alan Lawson will be attending the event that is expected to attract 5000 students.

International students are supported by Brisbane Marketing’s Study Brisbane team.
