A global survey of academics has confirmed The University of Queensland’s position among the world's top 100 universities.

UQ has achieved a Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings position of 71-80 for the second year in a row.

UQ is one of six Australian universities featured in the rankings released this week and is one of only three featured in the top 100 of all four major global university rankings.

These rankings are the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings and National Taiwan University Rankings.

The reputation rankings complement the Times Higher Education World University rankings, and reflect UQ's performance in advancing nine places to be ranked 65th overall in that table last October.

The Times Higher Education Reputation Rankings are based on a survey of academic opinion on the quality of research and teaching in institutions, and involved 16,639 respondents from 144 countries.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Høj said UQ's strong reputation was a testament to the commitment of students, current and former staff and alumni.

“The hard work by the UQ community in research, teaching and contributions to global society is reflected in these results,” he said.

“These rankings demonstrate broad recognition of the University and show that a degree from UQ offers an advantage for graduates and current and future students in Australia and all over the world.

“UQ is proud to be part of a national university community that now has six institutions in the reputation top 100.

“This is a fantastic outcome for a nation of Australia’s size, especially given that the nation ranks lowly for public investment in higher education.

“Imagine how good Australian universities could be with more generous and performance-based investment,” Professor Høj said.

UQ has been rated one of the world's leading 100 universities and well inside the top one per cent by a number of independent rankings with different methodologies in the past 12 months.

These include:
• the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities, which rated UQ at 90th in the world;

• the QS World University Rankings (world ranking 46);

• the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (65)

• the 2012 Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities (72).
