The University of Queensland’s Geography and Environmental Management Society (GEMS - a student run organisation) welcomed industry leaders to their professional presentation and networking event on Thursday 27 September.

“Industry Night offers both students and professionals in the areas of geography and environmental management an excellent opportunity to build networks that will further the development of these increasingly important fields,” Ms Natalie Lobartolo, President of UQ GEMS, said.

Over 80 students currently studying in the disciplines of geography and environmental management and sciences at UQ attended the event, as well as representatives from eleven renowned organisations within the field, including event sponsors AECOM, GHD, Ecofund QLD and Destination Spatial.

The highlight of the evening was a speed networking session where students were able to meet with company representatives and discuss each firms’ day-to-day responsibilities, what they are looking for in new graduates, and the hot topics in the larger scale industry.

A wide variety of companies attended, including professional consulting companies, environmental offset and regulation teams, spatial specialists, research professionals, companies with a strong sustainability focus and volunteering organisations.

“They [the companies] were very upbeat about the possibilities for students in these areas after graduation and it was a great opportunity for students to hear about the skills desired by industry,” Ms Lobartolo said.

“The goal of GEMS Industry Night was to provide students and professionals in the geography and environmental management fields with the chance to build networks and minimise any gaps associated with the transition from graduate students to industry professionals," she said.
