The University of Queensland is offering a range of hands-on activities for National Science Week, including solar array tours and coral conservation workshops.

UQ will kick off the week on Saturday, August 11 with a Young ICT Explorers competition at the UQ Centre, St Lucia campus and an information tent on the UQ Diamantina Institute at the Queen Street Mall for the launch of National Science Week.

Other UQ activities throughout the week include:

Monday, August 13: The 4th Annual Steve Irwin Memorial Lecture and the BrisScience Lecture

Tuesday, August 14: The screening of SCINEMA – short science films, hosted by the UQ Science Faculty and ASPinS

Wednesday, August 15:
Physics Demo Troupe presentation at Queen Street Mall
• A Climate Change Debate at the Queensland Museum – hosted by the Museum and featuring UQ debating society students
• A strawberry DNA extraction activity run by UQ’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience in the Mall at Brisbane’s Ekka

Thursday, August 16:
Solar Array Tours hosted by UQ’s Global Change Institute. The tour will showcase the Solar Array at UQ, the nation’s largest flat-panel photovoltaic solar power system.
• A discussion with high school students on stem cell research, led by UQ researcher Associate Professor Christine Wells from UQ’s Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). Click here to find out more

Corals at Your Doorstep Workshop: UQ-based not-for-profit organisation CoralWatch is holding a public workshop at Wellington Point where participants can learn about Moreton Bay corals and how to monitor coral health.

Saturday, August 18:
• Presentation by UQ’s Sarah Sweet on Star-forming dwarf galaxies in groups
