The University of Queensland’s new zebra crossing is bringing a smile to the face of staff and students who are using the sustainable transport options at the University.
The enhanced layout at the Conifer Knoll intersection at the St Lucia campus is designed to heighten safety awareness for both cyclists and pedestrians with vibrant zebra skin paintwork, sinusoidal ramps with shallow vegetation.
UQ's Property and Facilities division engaged consultancy firm GTA to develop a report with a striking solution to raise awareness of safe and sustainable transportation.
Mr Mark Kranz, Manager UQ Transport Systems, said that the feedback on the new crossing has been very positive.
“It looks great and cyclists have slowed down making the busy intersection much safer for both cyclists and pedestrians,” Mr Kranz said.
The distinctive looking crossing demonstrates the University’s commitment to two of the most sustainable forms of transport – walking and cycling.
Mr Davin Brown, a consultant for GTA said that the crossing was part of an exciting worldwide trend.
“These methods are being used more around the globe to promote awareness and fun around something that is usually quite standard,” Mr Brown said.
The crossing was opened in July 2012 and can be seen at the intersection of the cycle path and pedestrian walkway at Conifer Knoll.
