An International surgical practice network recognised the achievements of Associate Professor of Surgery Mark Smithers from the University of Queensland (UQ).

Associate Professor Smithers received the Fellowship ad hominem during a diploma ceremony tomorrow (Friday 29 June 2012) at the The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The Royal College of Surgeons of E recognising Associate Professor Smithers’ international standing in oesophago-gastric, laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery.

Speaking before the award ceremony, The College President David Tolley said he was delighted to welcome Associate Professor Smithers to receive his Fellowship.

“As well as making a significant contribution in the field of surgery, he has also carried out a substantial amount of research in the field of oesophagal cancer and melanoma,” Mr Tolley said.

“The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has a long history of innovation and Associate Professor Smithers’ contribution exemplifies this quality.

“I take great pleasure in presenting today’s (Friday, 29 June) award which marks Associate Professor Smithers’ outstanding achievement.”

Established in 1505, and with a worldwide membership, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is one of the world’s oldest and largest surgical establishments dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and advancement in surgical and dental practice, through its activities in education, training and examinations.

The Fellowship ad hominem is awarded to current or former practitioners or other individuals of distinction whose professional status is of a high order and who are deemed worthy of the honour.

At the diploma ceremony, Associate Professor Smithers joined surgeons worldwide who traveled to Edinburgh to receive Fellowship and Membership diplomas in recognition of their success in achieving the required standards of the rigorous surgical examinations.

Associate Professor Smithers said he was “truly honoured to receive the Fellowship from the College”.

“My surgical career has given me wonderful lasting friendships in Edinburgh and the UK,” he said.

“My distant relatives apparently came from Dunkeld and having spent part of my training in the UK with many visits to Edinburgh, it is wonderful to now have a formal link with my surgical colleagues in Scotland.

“In accepting this wonderful award I acknowledge the support I have had from my family and my colleagues at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.”
