Professional opportunities abroad are ever increasing, students of journalism, communications and international relations were told at their 2012 annual industry meet-up.

The United Nations Students’ Association (UNSA) and the Journalism and Communications Students (JACS) held their 2012 annual Professional Drinks Evening on May 16.

The students, from The University of Queensland, networked with professionals from journalism, communications, law, and international relations about the increasing opportunities within their respective industries.

Keynote speakers, JACS President Emma Fenton-Wells and UNSA President Clementine Fox, spoke of the increasing career- related and international opportunities available to UQ students.

“The event is designed to provide students with the opportunity to meet professionals working in different areas with an international focus”, said UNSA President, Clementine Fox.

The evening was established in 2010 to provide invaluable industry information to students on the diverse range of career paths available to them, with a particular focus on international relations, law, public policy and journalism.

This year, it brought together more than 70 students and 30 professionals. It provided students with the rare opportunity to seek advice directly from pre-eminent professionals and expose students to career paths they may not be aware of, and information on how to access such careers.

Journalism and international relations student, Elena Escalante Block said meeting professionals was a great way to gain information and advice about career paths.

“You learn a lot from professionals about their work, which you don’t get to hear about in classrooms,” she said.

Professional attendees included The Honourable Justice Michelle May, Federal Magistrate Michael Burnett, former Lord Mayor of Brisbane Sallyanne Atkinson, reporters for News Corporation Publications and Sky News, and senior public policy advisors.

The Professional Drinks Evening is the premier event in UNSA’s Experience Program, which also includes the Global Experiences Evening in March, and the Community Drinks Evening to be held in the second semester.
