The University of Queensland's School of Economics will host the 2012 International Schumpeter Society Conference from July 2 to July 5.
This will be the first time that the Schumpeter conference will be hosted in Australia.
Leading economists will gather in Brisbane to focus on the evolution of economic systems, through innovation, entrepreneurship and competitive processes, as the core themes.
Society President, Professor John Foster from UQ's School of Economics said he was delighted to showcase the School and the University at this world-renowned economic conference.
"Brisbane stands at the centre for the fastest growing region in Australia which boasts strong business infrastructure and innovative solutions, which are core themes at this year's conference," he said.
The International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society (ISS) was founded in 1986 and currently has more than 400 members from 40 countries.
The Society promotes the scientific study of the process of economic development and how it results in fluctuating economic growth.
In the spirit of Joseph Schumpeter, economics is viewed as an interdisciplinary science that must have political, social, institutional and legal dimensions if the complex process of economic development is to be fully understood.
ISS also publishes the Journal of Evolutionary Economics and each year awards the Schumpeter Prize which recognises a recent scholarly contribution related to Schumpeter's work.
It carries a cash award of 10,000 Euro. Since the founding conference in 1986, the Society has held biennial open-call conferences all over the world.
The conference was last held in Aalborg, Denmark in 2010.
The School of Economics is also hosting a number of international conferences in 2011.
