The University of Queensland has been ranked as the top Australian university in life sciences, according to the newest discipline ranking from the Times Higher Education.

UQ was ranked 26th in the world, improving 12 places on its 2010 ranking from 38 to 26.

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Max Lu said the result reflected UQ’s international standing in the life sciences.

“It is testament to the university’s focus over the past 10 years in building critical mass in life sciences by attracting and supporting talented researchers, and its on-going commitment to the provision of world-class research infrastructure to support their research endeavours,” he said.

The ranking is consistent with UQ’s results this year in life sciences in two other major international rankings.

UQ recently improved its international rankings in the Life and Agriculture Sciences in the 2011 prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities.

It advanced from a 2010 ranking in the 51-75 band to be ranked at 50 in the top 50 internationally http://www.shanghairanking.com/FieldLIFE2011.html.

UQ was ranked one of the world’s top universities in life sciences and medicine in the QS World University Rankings® for technical subjects, ranking 38th in these fields http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2011/subject-rankings/".

UQ was also voted one of the top three international academic institutions outside the USA in The Scientist magazine's annual Best Places to Work in Academia 2010 survey, announced in July this year, after being a newcomer to the survey last year. It is the only Australian university to feature in the survey.

UQ has 1011 full-time life science researchers.

They published 15,457 papers in the Life Sciences, according to ISI Web of Knowledge Essential Science Indicators, during the period January 1, 2001 to February 28, 2011.

Earlier this month UQ was given an overall ranking as one of the top 100 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education, with a ranking of 74.

UQ ranked 42nd in the world in the Times Higher Education Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health discipline ranking, maintaining its 2010 ranking.

It was also ranked 45th in the world in the Engineering discipline.
