The University of Queensland (UQ) celebrated some of its most inspiring and dedicated teachers at the 2011 UQ Excellence in Teaching and Learning Awards held last night.

Each year UQ acknowledges a committed and inspirational group of teachers and teaching programs at its annual teaching awards, which are a highlight of UQ’s Teaching and Learning Week.

In 2011, UQ awarded five individuals with UQ Awards for Teaching Excellence and one group with a UQ Award for Programs that Enhance Learning.

Another 11 individuals and groups were recognised with Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, Commendations for Teaching Excellence and a Commendation for Programs that Enhance Learning.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Deborah Terry, said the awards celebrate teaching excellence and help raise the professionalism, visibility and status of teaching and learning at UQ.

“UQ Teaching and Learning Week is a chance to thank all our teachers who embody this professionalism and commitment to excellence,” Professor Terry said.

“The award winners are all exemplary and inspirational teachers and many are leading education innovations both in Australia and overseas.

“UQ is home to Australia’s best university teachers, as evidenced by the University having won more national teaching awards than any other Australian university, and we continue to build further on our teaching excellence by providing support to UQ educators, with a total of $580,000 made available for UQ Teaching and Learning Strategic Grants in 2011.”

The UQ awards are split into three categories to recognise the depth and breadth of the University's commitment to teaching and learning:

- Awards for Teaching Excellence worth $10,000 for each individual; - Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning worth $10,000 for each team; - Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning worth $4000 each for individuals or teams.
