The UQ Art Museum will be seen in a new light when a special performance takes place at St Lucia early next month.

In a premiere event titled (Re) Interpretation,, Bachelor of Creative Arts students will present original performance pieces alongside works currently on show at the museum at 6.30pm on Monday, November 7.

Eighty-three students have devised original pieces inspired by two exhibitions – The UQ National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize 2011 and Surface Tension: The Art of Euan Macleod.

The performances are sure to intrigue audiences, with self-portrait prize entrants encouraged to take risks, and Surface Tension incorporating Australian and New Zealand iconography.

Convenor of the Bachelor of Creative Arts program Dr Sean Edgecomb said (Re) Interpretation challenged students to provide their own analysis of the works on display.

“These exhibitions give students the perfect opportunity to show their remarkable talent and showcase activities in the Creative Arts program,” Dr Edgecomb said.

“The students are presented with a great opportunity to create a close connection to the UQ Art Museum and the artworks it hosts. We look forward to building the relationship it has with current students.”

The Bachelor of Creative Arts program is dedicated to critically exploring the practice and theory of disciplines such as music, drama and creative writing in a global context.

Director of the UQ Art Museum Dr Campbell Gray said (Re) Interpretation provided a valuable opportunity to engage with visual art in new ways through other creative forms.

“As a consequence, we will have the privilege of considering all of the works presented with new eyes and ears,” Dr Gray said.

(Re) Interpretation is a free public event which will take place at the UQ Art Museum from 6:30–8:00pm on November 8.

RSVP by November 2 to artmuseum@uq.edu.au or by phone on (07) 3365 3046. Refreshments will be served following the performances.
