Leading ecologist and conservation biologist Dr Shelly Lachish will join The University of Queensland and The Brisbane Institute in presenting this year’s Steve Irwin Memorial Lecture on October 4.

This prestigious annual event, which is now entering its third successive year, will feature Dr Lachish’s key scientific findings about Devil Facial Tumour Disease and its dramatic impacts on populations of wild Tasmanian devils.

Devil Facial Tumour Disease is one of only three recorded cancers that spread like a contagious disease.

Dr Lachish will provide an insight on how current environmental management practices will help protect these Aussie icons from extinction.

Currently, Tasmanian devils are listed as endangered by the Federal and State governments and on the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

A graduate of UQ’s Science (Honours, 2000) and PhD (Zoology, 2009) programs, Dr Lachish is currently working as a postdoctoral research associate at the Edward Grey Institute in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford.

Members of the public and media are invited to attend this event.
