The University of Queensland has been ranked one of the world’s top universities in the first QS World University Rankings® for arts and humanities at topuniversities.com.

UQ was listed in the top 50 in the world in modern languages (world rank 29), history (ranked =36), philosophy (40), English language and literature (45) and geography and area studies (50).

It also was ranked in the top 100 in linguistics.

Rankings were based on a methodology that included academic reputation, employer reputation, and the number of citations per paper.

UQ’s result correlates with the University’s 43rd overall ranking in the top 200 QS World University Rankings® in 2010, placing UQ among the top one percent of more than 9000 international universities.

This year, UQ was ranked above world standard in more broad fields of research than any other Australian university in the Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation.

UQ has consistently performed well in the top band of international university rankings.

In other recent QS subject rankings, UQ was placed in the top 50 in psychology (26), environmental science (26), chemical engineering (29), medicine (33), civil and structural engineering (34), biological sciences (38), mathematics (=40), and computer science and information systems (48).

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Max Lu congratulated UQ researchers for their strong performance in the latest QS rankings.

“UQ's arts and humanities offerings are the leading programs in their field in Queensland and featured in the highest two rating bands — well above world standard and above world standard — in the recent Excellence in Research for Australia evaluation,” Professor Lu said.

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts at UQ Professor Nancy Wright said: “Faculty of Arts disciplines are internationally recognised for teaching and research excellence.”

“These new rankings confirm the high international standing of teaching in our disciplines which are on par with other leading Arts and Humanities Faculties around the world.”

The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2011, which were published in March, lists four Australian universities - UQ, the University of Melbourne, University of Sydney and The Australian National University - in its top 100 universities worldwide.

UQ received 81st ranking in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011 released last September.

UQ ranked among the top 18 universities in the Asia-Pacific region and 108th worldwide in the 2010 Academic Rankings of World Universities conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
