The breadth of The University of Queensland's (UQ) activities in Vietnam was observed first-hand by the Governor-General, Dr Quentin Bryce AC, during her recent visit to the country - the first by an Australian Governor-General.

The Governor-General visited a number of UQ affiliated sites and activities, including a tour of the Atlantic Philanthropies’ initiated University of Danang-University of Queensland English Language Institute (UD-UQ ELI).

Escorted by the President of UD and the Director of ELI, Dr Bryce met with UD-UQ ELI students and staff, including one of her former students, and UQ Law Alumna, who is now a teacher at the ELI.

Following the visit, Dr Bryce remarked on “the enthusiasm of the students and the quality of English language provided by [ELI] staff”. She noted that both are contributing positively to the level of service in the local tourism and hospitality industry.

In Hue, Dr Bryce met with UQ staff, alumni, and a group of Medical and Therapies students who were the first UQ cohort to undertake a clinical placement in association with Vietnam’s Office of Genetic Counseling and Disabled Children (OGCDC) and College of Medicine and Pharmacy.

The Governor-General also presented Dr Pham Thi Hong Nhung, Vice Rector of the College of Foreign Languages at Hue University, with an Australian Government Endeavour Executive Award.

This award includes a professional development placement, which Dr Nhung will undertake at UQ’s Institute of Continuing & TESOL Education (ICTE-UQ). Dr Nhung holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from UQ.
