Lessons learned from the NATO allies’ ongoing military operation in Libya were the subject of a seminar at The University of Queensland’s TC Beirne School of Law today.

Donald R. Rothwell, Professor of International Law and Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Military Law and Justice at the ANU College of Law, Australian National University will present the seminar, entitled Operationalising the Responsibility to Protect: The Libyan Experience.

The Centre for Public, International and Comparative Law at the TC Beirne School of Law is hosting the lunchtime seminar.

Professor Rothwell will discuss issues arising from Operation United Protector, which started in March under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973.

These include the international law governing the use of force, international humanitarian law, international security law, international criminal law, and UN practice.

Professor Rothwell’s work crosses many areas of international law, with a specific focus on maritime law, the law of the polar regions, international security and the implementation of international law within Australia.

His research appears in more than 150 articles and book chapters in international and Australian publications, and he is co-editor-in-chief of the Australian Year Book of International Law.

His current projects include an assessment of Antarctic security and Australian coastal and marine law.

Professor Rothwell is a graduate of The University of Queensland (BA/LLB), and a regular media commentator on international law issues. He has written for all Australia’s major daily newspapers and regularly appears on ABC TV’s 7.30 and Lateline, and ABC Radio AM, and PM programs.
