Sociology and Education at The University of Queensland have been identified as national leaders in their fields following the recently released Excellence in Research for Australia survey.

The two fields of research were the standout leaders in their disciplines across Australia, after being assessed as performing “well above world standard”.

This ranking reflects the excellence of researchers in the School of Social Science, and affiliated areas such as the Institute of Social Science Research, and the School of Education.

Five more disciplines within UQ’s Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences were also ranked equal top or equal second in the country, placing them well above world standard.

These were Studies in Human Society, Anthropology, Political Science, Social Work and Archaeology. Psychology and Communication disciplines also rated “above world standard”.

The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Professor David de Vaus, said the results recognised UQ’s outstanding reputation for excellence in social science research.

“Disciplines in SBS have a great deal to be proud of and the ERA results reflect our ability to perform in so many areas above world standard,” he said.

“This reflects both the strength of researchers in the Faculty and the University’s strong research culture.”

Professor de Vaus said the strength of UQ in social and behavioural science disciplines demonstrated the health of these disciplines at UQ and clearly marked SBS as one of the leading and most comprehensive faculties of its type in the country.

The landmark ERA report, released after five years of development, highlights UQ's position as a heavyweight research body on the world scene.
