The University of Queensland has again been ranked as one of the world’s top 50 leading universities for the seventh year in a row in the QS World University Rankings released today.

UQ has been ranked as the top University in Queensland and one of the top nationally in the QS rankings at http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/home

UQ was ranked at 43 in the world and was one of seven Australian universities in the top 100.

UQ Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Max Lu said UQ was not resting on its laurels and had been working hard to continually improve its performance.

At last count, UNESCO recognised more than 9000 universities in the world, so the ranking places UQ among the top one percent of international universities.

Professor Lu said the ranking recognised the University’s strong investment in research infrastructure and high quality researchers.

It also endorsed strong government and philanthropic investment.

“During the University’s Centenary year, this ranking is a credit to the University’s global community of staff, students and alumni, who have made meaningful contributions at State, national and international levels,” Professor Lu said.

In the QS rankings UQ earned an international rank of 40 for the Life Sciences and Medicine, 61 for the Social Sciences, and was ranked 62nd in Engineering and Technology.

Its staff/student ratio was listed as 11.8:1, and the University enjoyed a high proportion of international staff and students.

Scopus publications metrics for 2005-2009 were 24,420 papers and 134,378 citations featuring UQ researchers.

The latest rankings come on the heels of the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released this month at awru.org, which gave UQ an Asia-Pacific universities ranking of 11.

The ARWU rankings calculated that UQ improved its performance six places to 108.

UQ was ranked in the top 100 internationally in Life and Agricultural Sciences (ranking 63) and Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy (63) in the ARWU rankings.

The University is awaiting results of the Times Higher Education world university rankings to be released on September 16 at http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/
