Maroochydore State High School student Tyson Cooke will be riding with more than just pedal power, after winning an electric bike at a UQ careers day held last week.

Tyson won the prize as part of the inaugural Careers that Shape the World Day, which welcomed more than 700 year 11 and 12 students from high schools across South East Queensland to the St Lucia campus.

Students explored career opportunities, and attended lectures and workshops with industry representatives, academic staff and current UQ students.

Topics covered included: careers in health, business, psychology, education, engineering, the media, science, agriculture, architecture and law.

Tyson’s name was randomly drawn from a list of all registered students and he had to choose between a zero-emissions electric bike or scooter provided by event sponsors NOPE Electric Bike and Scooters and Brisbanetimes.com.au.

Tyson, from Pacific Paradise, said he chose the NOPE Luxe IV electric bike because he already enjoyed cycling.

“I can’t believe I won! It’s such an awesome prize and it topped off an already great day,” he said.

Director of NOPE, Harry Samson, said the NOPE Luxe IV was perfect for getting around the coast.

“With no petrol, no pollution and no parking fees, and at a cost of only five cents per 50 kilometres, the electric bike saves you money and is great fun to ride,” Mr Samson said.

“Your electric scooter or bike simply needs to be plugged into a standard electric socket to be recharged and is a reliable, cost effective form of alternative transport.”
