UQ Alumna and Governor-General Dr Quentin Bryce AC will return to The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, where she both studied and taught, for the unveiling of two new carvings in the heritage-listed Great Court.
The unveiling ceremony will take place on Saturday July 3 at 10am in the Great Court as part of the University’s Centenary Alumni Reunion Weekend.
The badges of the Queensland University Regiment and the Queensland University Squadron have been carved on columns at the Parnell Building by acclaimed sculptor and UQ alumna Dr Rhyl Hinwood AM.
“They are the first carvings to be created in the Great Court for quite some years,” the Executive Officer of the Centenary Secretariat, Miss Ellen Juhasz said.
“The column capitals have typically been decorated with coats of arms of universities from around the world, so this departure has been specially approved for the Centenary year.”
“The Governor-General’s attendance makes it a particularly important occasion for the University and for past QUR and QUS members.”
Australia’s first female Governor-General, Dr Bryce, graduated from UQ with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1965.
Dr Bryce also lectured and tutored at the UQ School of Law from 1968 - 1983, and has made many contributions and advancements to human rights and equality, the rights of women and children, and the welfare of the family throughout her distinguished career.
All alumni, and especially former members of the QUR and the QUS, are welcome at the unveiling.
The ceremony forms part of the UQ Centenary Alumni Reunion Weekend which runs from July 2 – 4.
Thousands of alumni are expected to return to campus for the Alumni Reunion Weekend, which will also incorporate school, faculty and college reunions.
Some events and activities are open to the general public, including a Carnival in the Great Court, which will feature live music, international food stalls, kids’ activities and sports demonstrations.
Other events and activities open to the public are a lecture at 12pm by the University’s Global Change Institute Director, Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg , a special talk at 1pm by alumnus Mr Graeme Wood, co-founder of Wotif.com, tours of the Queensland Brain Institute, a public debate on the sustainability of Australian mines and the popular Alumni Friends Book Fair.
